[edit] History

When it was formed during the French RevolutionImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, as of March 4, 1790 in fulfillment of the law of December 22 1789, the new department combined parts of the provincesImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif of southern BurgundyImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif and BresseImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, uniting lands that had no previous common history nor political unity and which have no true geographical unity. Thus its history is that of BurgundyImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, and is especially to be found in the local histories of AutunImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, MâconImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, Chalon-sur-SaôneImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, CharollesImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif and LouhansImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif.

[edit] Geography

Saône-et-Loire is the seventh largest department of France and the most densely populated in the regionImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif of BourgogneImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif. In the west the department is composed of the hills of the Autunois, the region around AutunImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, of the CharollaisImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif and of the MâconnaisImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif. In the center it is traversed from north to south by the Saône in its wide plain; the Saône is a tributary of the River RhôneImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif that joins it at LyonImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif and thus is connected to the Mediterranean SeaImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif. The Loire makes its way in the opposite direction, draining into the Atlantic OceanImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif. A canal (canal du centre) links the Saône to the Loire between Chalon-sur-SaôneImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif and DigoinImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif, thereby linking the Mediterranean SeaImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif to the Atlantic oceanImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif. In the east the department occupies the northern part of the plain of Bresse. In the west its industrial heart is in Le CreusotImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif and Montceau-les-MinesImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif.
