The toolbar is a handy device, visible in most browsers other than Safari, just above the editing box.

Some of its dozen buttons will be familiar to users of Microsoft Word: first two buttons are for Bold text and Italic text. The others are fairly self-explanatory if your mouse hovers over them. Some need text highlighted before you hit them.
