Help:Alternative types of page for individual

From Genealogy

Jump to: navigation, search

This page is intended to provide a "fast link" to page creation for a range of "person" articles. Select an "input box" to create an article with a particular format. Before you create your first page, it would be good if you could read Help:Starting pages for people, places, or surnames/Guidance for additional information on page creation, including information on page name conventions, as well as information on other methods of creating articles.

For "person article titles" (except for royalty and nobility), please always use the form Given-name Optionally-middle-name-or-initial-if-known Surname (YOB-YOD) unless you are using a Wikipedia name exactly;
Just a hyphen (not an en-dash) and no spaces between dates; use "c", "bef", and "aft" (also without spaces) to condition the dates.

[edit] Strongly recommended format using info pages

  • Info page format - Use the first creation box to create the info page, e.g. "John Doe (c1780-?)/info". On that info page, fill in (after the appropriate "=" signs) as much information as you know. (You can add or change later.)

    Save the page (ignoring how it looks). Copy the pagename to your clipboard and return here.

    1. If the matching article already exists, please copy the whole of Genealogy:Info pages/person_article_template from its "edit" box and paste into the top of the article then adjust as desired.
    2. If there is no article yet, enter the identical page name below except for the "/info", to create an infobox-style article that will use the info page data.

    For another set of infoboxes that do the above job but with more explanation of the process, please see http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/Genealogy:Info_pages#Instructions.

    [edit] Other page styles

    1. Blank format (When you just need a blank "piece of paper".)

    2. Old standard format (When you want just a little more than basic stuff, plus some optional guidance and preloaded headings)

    3. Boxed format (Old-style fairly standard format but with some of the information in boxes)

    4. Infobox format (Page layout similar to the Wikipedia biography infobox style — but "info pages" are like that too)

    [edit] Create your own?

    Any article created with one of these templates can be modified to meet specific needs. If you find yourself having to modify many articles to meet your requirement, consider creating a template of your own. (Try Forum:Help desk for help with this if you wish). Bear in mind, though, that other relatives may want to help and may prefer a standard style easier to work with and to link from.
